I picked up a copy of The Bane Chronicles because I am an avid Cassandra Clare fan. However, I am not the biggest fan of short stories, or short story collections. I read a couple of them in high school, and I just did not enjoy the format.

Goodreads summary The Bane Chronicles:

Fans of The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices can get to know warlock Magnus Bane like never before in this collection of New York Times bestselling tales, in print for the first time with an exclusive new story and illustrated material.

This collection of eleven short stories illuminates the life of the enigmatic Magnus Bane, whose alluring personality, flamboyant style, and sharp wit populate the pages of the #1 New York Times bestselling series, The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices.

Originally released one-by-one as e-only short stories by Cassandra Clare, Maureen Johnson, and Sarah Rees Brennan, this compilation presents all ten together in print for the first time and includes a never-before-seen eleventh tale, as well as new illustrated material.

My Review of The Bane Chronicles:

I’m also not the biggest fan of short-story-prequel-type books that are added onto popular series after they’ve ended so that you can read more about some of the characters. I don’t know why it bothers me, because by nature it should be wonderful and add more interest to the world that I’ve read and loved, but to me it just doesn’t hold my interest or build upon the characters the way I want them to.

Now, I obviously don’t have much to base my opinion on. I already mentioned that I have never read anything like The Bane Chronicles. But all in all, that’s pretty much how I feel about them now.

All in all, I liked getting to know Magnus Bane more as a character throughout these short stories. It was interesting to see some of his adventures and misdeeds throughout history. However, I grew bored because there wasn’t really a connecting connecting thread between the all of the short stories. Perhaps just Magnus trying to find love, I suppose.

It was alright but I don’t think I’ll be reading anything like this again. Though personally, I loved the touch of added illustrations for each short. I think it’s really nice and I liked the artwork.

I’ll give The Bane Chronicles 3/5 stars.
